This is a hill station lying on the spur of the Dhauladhar range about 17 kms north- east of Kangra town. This hill station is wooded with oak and conifer trees and snow capped mountains enfold three sides of the town while the valley stretches in front. The snowline is perhaps more easily accessible at Dharamshala than at any other hill resort and it is possible to make a day's trek to a snow-point after an early morning's start. Dharamshala is also the head quarter of the Kangra district.
Dharamsala is known for its scenic beauty, calmness and serenity. It has high pine trees, tea gardens and timber yielding trees. In winter, the temperature can drop to freezing point when heavy woolens are required. During summer, the climate is mild and light woolens / cottons are recommended.
Dharamsala is now the seat of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. After the Chinese conquest of his country, Dharamsala is evocative of the imperial days in places like Mcleod Ganj and Forsythe Ganj. Dharamsala is the headquarters of the Kangra district. It became the capital in 1852 and is 125 years old.
The city is divided into two distinct sections. Kotwali Bazaar and the surrounding markets are referred to as "Lower Dharamshala" or just "Dharamshala." Further up the mountain is McLeodGanj separated in between by the village of Ganchen Kyishong, the home of the Tibetan government-in-exile. A steep, narrow road connects McLeodGanj from Dharamshala and is only accessible to taxis and small cars, while a longer road winds around the valley for use by buses and trucks. McLeodGanj is surrounded by pine, Himalayan oak, and rhododendron.
Dharamsala can be approached by air from Delhi. The nearest airport is at Gaggal, 13 km away. Pathankot, the nearest broad gauge railway station is 85 km away and the toy train station is 17 km at Kangra. Taxis and Buses for Dharamsala are available at both places. From Pathankot the drive takes about three hours or you can drive from Delhi (526 km) via Chandigarh, Kiratpur and Bilaspur and takes 12 hours.

KANGRA ART MUSEUM, KOTWALI BAZAR : This treasure trove of the Kangra Valley displays arts, crafts and rich past, artifacts that date back to the 5th century. It includes a gallery of Kangra's famous miniature painting and a representative collection of sculptures, pottery and anthropological items. Shamianas and dresses used by local royalty, old carved doors, jails, lintels and pandals are also on display Coins, jewelry and manuscripts are included. A section houses the work of contemporary artists, sculptures and photographers.
WAR MEMORIAL : At their start of town, landscaped lawns and a web of narrow paths fill a pine grove where a monument has been raised to commemorate the post independence war heroes of Himachal Pradesh.
KUNAL PATHRI : A 3 km level walk from the Kotwali Bazaar leads up to this rock temple.
ST. JOHN'S CHURCH : 8 km from Dharamsala, between Forsythganj and Mcleodganj is the charming church of St. John in the Wilderness. Under the shade of deodar branches, a memorial has been erected over the body of the British Viceroy, Lord Elgin who died at Dharamsala in 1863. There is a well tended old graveyard on these grassy sloped.
MCLEODGANJ: Often called the Little Lhasa, at 1770m is the residence of His Holiness, The Dalai Lama. The Tibetan Government in exile has been head quartered here for over three decades. The impressive monastery has larger than life images of the Buddha, Padmasambhava and Avaloktwshwara. The large Tibetan community and the presence of traditional architectural designs drawn from Tibet have enhanced the area. Tibetian handicrafts and garments are available on sale every Sunday. The Tibetian Institute of Performing Arts is just a km away and organises a ten day festival from the second Saturday of April.
DAL LAKE : 11 km from Dharamsala and surrounded by deodar trees this is an enchanting and serene picnic spot.
BHAGSUNATH : Close to fresh springs, this ancient temple is 11 km from Dharamsala. It is a popular picnic spot and the famous slate quarries are close by.
CHINMAYA TAPOVAN : 10 km from Dharamsala on the banks of the rivulet Bindusaras, is an ashram complex established by the late Swami Chinmayananda, a noted exponent of the Gita. NURPUR : 66km from Dharamsala and 26 km from Pathankot, Nurpur is famous for old fort and a temple of Brijraj. Nurpur acquired its name in 1672, when Jahangir, the Mughal Emperor named it after his wife Nurjahan.
OTHER ATTRACTIONS : The temple of Jwalamukhi, Chamunda Devi and Brijeshwari Devi are other pilgrim centers close to Dharamsala. The fort of Kangra and Ma11ngarh are other attractions.

Day 1 - Arrive in Delhi - Drive from Delhi to Shimla (330 km/approx. 9 hours)

After arriving at Delhi Airport/Railway Station, board the designated vehicle and drive to Shimla. This scenic hill station served as the summer capital of the British before the Indian independence. After the end of British rule in India, Shimla was named the capital of Punjab; later, it became the capital of the state of Himachal Pradesh.

Owing to its snow-capped mountains, pleasant climate, serene environment and meandering streets, Shimla is often referred to as the 'Queen of the Hills'. It is located at an elevation of about 2200 m above sea level. Day2 Trip to Kufri

Owing to its vast expanse of lush greenery, pleasant climate and scenic environs, this place is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. The hill station of Manali is located in the valley of the Beas River. It lies about 40 km away from another picturesque hill station – Kullu. It is believed that this place has been named after Manu, considered to the lawgiver of the Hindus. There is an ancient temple, devoted to Lord Manu in Manali.

Day 4 Trip to Rohtang Pass

Hadimba Temple is dedicated to goddess Hadimba and is well known for its unique dome shaped construction and carvings. In Old Manali, you can see old-styled wooden Pahari houses and visit Manu Temple. Vasisht Village is famous for its sulphurous springs, views of sweeping valleys and Vasisht Temple.

Visit some famous tourist attractions in Dalhousie that include Panchpula, Bara Pathar, St. John's Church, Subhash Baoli, Bakrota Hills etc.

Panchpula is a stream of fresh water that is made up of several natural pools. This stream is known to be the main water supplier to Dalhousie. You will also notice  the Satdhara springs at Panchpula. A monument in the remembrance of Sardar Ajit Singh, a revolutionary in Indian freedom struggle, is constructed at Panchpula. You will observe that the monument is the meeting point of several streams.

At Bada Paar, visit Bhulwani Mata Mandir which is a small temple located in the middle of a dense forest in Ahla village.

Visit St. John's Church whose architecture reminds of the Victorian era. This Protestant church resembles the Roman Catholic Church in England. In the library of the church, you will find rare photos and books that narrate the story of Dalhousie's culture and history.

Subhash Baoli is a seasonal spring with medicated, fresh water. It is named after Subhash Chandra Bose, the renowned freedom fighter. It is said that he spent seven months in Dalhousie to cure himself with the water of this spring.

From Bakrota Hills, you will get to see a fantastic view of Himalayan peaks. At Bakrota Mall, you can walk through the 5 km rounded path and get the privilege to see a panoramic view of beautiful mountain peaks, forests and valleys through different angles.
