Thekkady - A Wildlife Sanctuary for those who love nature in its wild manifestations.

Thekkady in Kerala State, India's largest wildlife sanctuary is a dream destination for any tourist visiting India. The 120 years old 'Surki' dam built across Peryiar, Poorna in Vedic parlance, is a major tourist attraction. Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

One of the major attractions in Thekkady is this fantastic sanctuary, which is also a tiger reserve, that is spread across an area of 777 sq. km, around the man-made lake of Thekkady. The sanctuary is also home to the endangered lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, elephant, sambar, gaur, deer, Indian bison and bear.

This placid lake is located near the Periyar national reserve. Tourists can go for boating and enjoy the serene surroundings. If you are lucky you may even get a chance to see herds of elephants bathing on the lakeside.

An ancient temple (almost 2000 years old) designed in Pandian style of architecture, this temple is dedicated to Devi Kannagi or Mangala and is at a distance of about 15 km from Thekkady. Situated on the top of a cliff and surrounded by trees, this temple is visited by many pilgrims. Please note that it is necessary to get permission from the wildlife authorities in Thekkady to visit the area.

Gulmarg literally means meadow of flowers. It is a majestic hill station in the district of Baramula of Jammu and Kashmir in India. The hill station, at an altitude of 2730 m, was earlier known as Gaurimarg, where Gauri stands for Goddess Parvati the wife of Lord Shiva. The name Gulmarg was given to this place by the King Yousuf Shah Chak. Gulmarg is one of the beautiful place that can be visited in Kashmir valley.The Clubhouse itself, reminiscent of a Swiss chalet with its quaintly sloping roof, has a rare old character. The Golf Club offers short-term memberships to the players. The payment of a fee entitles one to play on the golf course. One can also hire the golf sets from Gulmarg.

Alpather Lake

The Alpather Lake is a picturesque alpine lake that remains frozen until late June. The lake lies across the Apharwat peak. The adventure tourists can take the one-day and thirteen km trip to the Alpather Lake from Gulmarg.

Wular Lake

The Wular Lake is situated on the route from Gulmarg to Srinagar on Baramula Road at Sangrama. The Wular lake is the largest fresh-water lake in Kashmir and the second largest in India. It looks like the Genevo Lake of Switzerland. It has a beautiful setting, with Haramuk Mountain at its head. The sunset at the lake is breathtaking.

Vrindavan-The Land of Lord Krishna

Vrindavan, around 15 km from Mathura, is a little town and a major place of pilgrimage on the banks of Yamuna. Attracting about 500 000 pilgrims every year, mainly during major festivals like Janmashtami, Holi and Radhashtami, it is noted for its numerous temples, both old and modern, big and small (allegedly 5000 altogether). Vrindavan is synonymous with the childhood pastimes of Sri Krishna. The name 'Vrindavan' is derived from 'Vrinda', another name for the sacred tulsi (basil) plant. It is said that the entire place was a tulsi grove at one time.

Govind Dev Temple

For unknown reasons, the Govind Dev Temple is often referred to as being the Govind Dev Temple of Mathura instead of Vrindavan. It is one of the most important temples in Vrindavan and the main deity here is Govind Dev or Lord Krishna. The Idol was brought to this temple by the Rajput king of Jaipur, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II.

Hare Rama Hare Krishna Temple
A temple by the ISKCON society, the Hare Rama Hare Krishna temple is one of the major temples in Vrindavan. The temple is one of the most peaceful places one can visit and is best visited during Janmashtami.

Keshi Ghat
Located on the banks of the River Yamuna, the Keshi Ghat is one of the most important Ghats in Vrindavan. The magnificent Madanmohan temple at the back drop and the Yamuna River provides one of the most spiritually content Ghats in Vrindavan. The Keshi ghat was the place where Lord Krishna took a bath after he slew the demon Keshi and is considered a revered pilgrim spot.

Bankey Bihari Temple
The temple was built by the great Indian music guru Swami Haridas who was also the guru of the famous Tansen, a famous musician in Akbar's court. The temple was built in 1862 by Swami Haridas as he wanted to house an old idol of Lord Krishna in his enjoyer or Bankey Bihari posture and keep it from getting into the hands of the Mughals. One of the major and most famous temples in Vrindavan is not to be missed.

Shahji Temple
Built by Shah Kundan Lal who was a famous jeweller in Lucknow, the temple was named Shahji Temple. The temple is famous for its distinctive neo-Dravidian architecture and stone carvings. The Darbar Kamra is a hall that is decorated with grand chandeliers and wall paintings. The twelve marble carved spiral columns are a marvel to behold.

Ranganathaji Temple
The temple was built in a distinctive Dravidian style and was completed in 1851 and is dedicated to Lord Ranganath a name for Lord Vishnu. The temple sports a majestic gopuram which can be seen from far. The temple is famous for its amazing temple complex and the fine architectural aesthetics.

Vaishno Devi, also known as Mata Rani, Trikuta and Vaishnavi, is a manifestation of the Hindu Mother Goddess Mahalakshmi.[1] The words "maa" and "mata" are commonly used in India for "mother", and thus are often used in connection with Vaishno Devi. Vaishno Devi Mandir is a Hindu temple dedicated to the Hindu Goddess, located in Katra at the Trikuta Mountains within the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The Temple or Bhawan is 13.5 km from Katra and various modes of transportation are available from katra to Bhawan, including Ponies, Electric vehicles and paalkhis operated by 2 or 4 persons. Helicopter services are also available up to Sanjichhat, which is 9.5 km from Katra.[2][3] Bhairon temple is another 1.5 km from Bhawan.

Shiva Temple

Known as the Ernakulathappan Temple, the God of this temple is named after the city (Ernakulam). The deity Shiva, faces the west towards the sea which is a rarity. The idols of Lord Shiva and Parvathi found in the temple are believed to be self created. The Arattu procession where the deity is taken for a ritual bath in the temple pond marks the end of the eight day festival during the months of January and February.

Hill Palace Museum, Tripunithura

The palace on a hill-top was built in 1865 and was the residence of the Raja of Cochin. The largest archeological museum of Kerala it is set up in 52 acres of land and has 49 buildings. Exhibits displayed in its 18 galleries include the royal throne and other antique furniture, precious jewellery used by the kings and queens, royal chariots, palanquins, royal clothes, earthen, brass and bronze vessels, gold coins, and swords and spears.

10 kms from the city this museum at Edappally was the brainchild of industrialist and philanthropist, R Madhavan Nair. The sculptures in the museum depict the history of Kerala through the Neolithic Age to the Modern age. The one hour light and sound show depicts Kerala's journey through the past to the present day. There is a gallery of contemporary and miniature paintings holding over 200 pieces of art.

St Francis Church

It is India's first European church built in 1503 by a group of Portuguese. The Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama was buried here in 1524. 14 years later his remains were taken back to Lisbon, however, his tombstone remains intact. Regular services are conducted on all days of the week in English and Malayalam at the church.

Fort Kochi Beach

The Fort Kochi beach with its Chinese fishing nets and wonderful sunsets is a place you must visit when you are in Kochi. A colourful carnival on the New Years Eve attracts a number of tourists to the beach. You can even get roadside restaurateurs to cook these catches for you the way you like! Willingdon Island

Named after the viceroy of India, Lord Willingdon, this 775 acre island was created from the soil dredged up while deepening Kochi's Harbour in 1928. This engineering feat was led by Sir Robert Bristow. The island lies between mainland Ernakulam and Mattancherry. The island houses the Cochin Port Trust and the headquarters of the Southern Naval Command. Luxury hotels such as the Taj Malabar, the Trident Hilton and Casino Hotel are also built on the island.

Leh Ladakh ; The Land of LAMAS

"India's Own Moonland" Leh, a high-desert city in the Himalayas, is the capital of the Leh region in northern India’s Jammu and Kashmir state. Originally a stop for trading caravans, Leh is now known for its Buddhist sites and nearby trekking areas. Modelled on the basis of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Leh Palace was built by King Sengge Namgyal in the 17th century. The palace is nine storeys high, where the upper floors used to accommodate the royal family, while the lower floors held stables and store rooms. The roof provides panoramic views of Leh and the surrounding areas, as the mountain of Stok Kangri in the Zangskar mountain range is visible across the Indus valley to the south, with the Ladakh mountain range rising behind the palace is visible in the north.
